As part of Comcast’s nationwide Lift Zone initiative, Iona's Washington Home Center in Congress Heights will now serve as a designated Lift Zone for older adults in need of Internet and technology access.
“Becoming a Lift Zone is an important opportunity for Iona to help close the digital divide affecting older adults in southeast DC who lack essential access to technology and high-speed Internet,” says Iona CEO Joon Bang. “As an organization and community site, we are committed to bringing additional resources and opportunities to an area of the District that has long been underserved.”
As a Lift Zone, Iona's Washington Home Center will receive free high-speed Wi-Fi for three years, in addition to $10,000 and 15 laptops donated by Comcast. This support will allow Iona to enhance its technology programs for older adult participants, including Technology Tuesdays where participants learn how to create an email address, conduct information searches, make video calls with friends and family members, and listen to music online. In addition, the center will help participants research places they have "visited" through the use of virtual reality goggles.
On July 11, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the center with participants, community members, and special guests.
